This example uses a suite of COBOL programs and BMS mapsets to display the contents of a user requsted record from the Customer Master File. The information is displayed in a hexadecimal (or DUMP) format. This transaction is provided as a tool for programmers and support personnel. The programs use command level CICS statements to access the VSAM Master File and display information to a 3270 terminal or terminal emulator. The programs run on an IBM Mainframe System with CICS or a Microsoft Windows System with Micro Focus Server for Mainframe Migration.

When the Hex-dump utility program is first executed a screen with the prompt for a customer number and record position is displayed. The user should type a customer number. If the record position is not entered it will default to position 1.

When the user presses the "Enter" key the program will get the requested record and re-display the screen with the first 256 bytes of the customer record starting in position one (1). If the requested customer cannot be found an error message is posted to the screen. The user may enter another customer number or change the starting position.

The Customer Master File is a VSAM, Key-Sequenced-Data-Set (KSDS). The length of the records in the data set is 512 bytes. The key field starts in position one (1) and is 12 bytes in length. The following is the COBOL copy file that defines the record layout.
The purpose of this suite of program is to provide examples that use command level CICS in COBOL programs to access VSAM, Key-Sequenced-Data-Sets (KSDS) and display the information using standard BMS screen definitions to a 3270 terminal or terminal emulator. A hexadecimal dump format is used to display 256 byte blocks of data based on a user specified starting position in the record.

Founded in 1987, SimoTime Technologies is a privately owned company. We specialize in the creation and deployment of business applications using new or existing technologies and services. We have a team of individuals that understand the broad range of technologies being used in today's environments. This includes the smallest thin client using the Internet and the very large mainframe systems. There is more to making the Internet work for your company's business than just having a nice looking WEB site. It is about combining the latest technologies and existing technologies with practical business experience. It's about the business of doing business and looking good in the process. Quite often, to reach larger markets or provide a higher level of service to existing customers it requires the newer Internet technologies to work in a complementary manner with existing corporate mainframe systems.
