This document describes how to compile the programs using the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that is included in Net Express. The IDE is a graphical user interface (GUI) provided for developing, compiling and debugging COBOL-oriented applications. This is a three step process.
| 1. | Start Net Express. |
| 2. | Choose the compile option. |
| 3. | Compile all the COBOL programs for animation. |
Note: This module is part of The SimoPATH Series of training and reference materials. For more information refer to The Home Page for The SimoPATH Series.
Once the Net Express project has been created and the source members and copy files have been added to the project it is very simple to compile the programs (Micro Focus uses the term "Rebuild" within Net Express).
The following shows the simple process for compiling (or rebuilding) all the programs in the project.
| 1.1 | From the Net Express tool bar select the "Project" option. |
| 1.2 | From the drop-down list select the "Rebuild All" option. |
Net Express will compile all the programs in the project.
The following window should be displayed.
| 2.1 | Notice the messages in the lower-left window pane. The programs have been compiled. |
This section describes how to select and compile a single source member from within a Net Express project.
The following is the Net Express Desktop with the Project display.
| 1. | Double click on the name of the source member (ItKeKaC1.CBL). |
| 2. | Notice the "check" icon is inactive or gray. A compile (check or rebuild in Micro Focus terminology) of a single source member cannot be done using this icon. |
By selecting (or double-clicking) on the source member in the preceding step the following window should be displayed showing the source code.
| 1. | The source code is displayed in the larger, upper window pane. The source member name is displayed on the title bar and the center bar. |
| 2. | The "Check" icon is now active and the single program may be compiled by clicking on this icon.. |
| 3. | The results of the compile are displayed in the lower-left window pane. |
The purpose of this document is to show how to compile programs within a Net Express project.

The SimoZAPS Utility Program has the capability of generating a COBOL program that will do the conversion of sequential and VSAM (KSDS) files between EBCDIC and ASCII. SimoZAPS can also read a sequential file in EBCDIC format and create an ASCII/CRLF file or VSAM KSDS file in ASCII format. The conversion tables may be viewed or modified to meet unique requirements. The Hexcess/2 function provides the capability of viewing, finding or patching the contents of a file in hexadecimal.
The SimoREC1 Utility Program has the capability of generating a callable COBOL program that will do the conversion of a data string between EBCDIC and ASCII. The generated COBOL source code or the conversion tables may be viewed or modified to meet unique requirements. The generated program may be called by an I/O program generated by SimoZAPS.
This item will provide a link to an ASCII or EBCDIC translation table. A column for decimal, hexadecimal and binary is also included.
