Table of Contents Previous Section Next Section Introduction

This purpose of this document is to provide an introduction and overview of various approaches to functional and performance testing for business applications. This document includes a description of how to test business processes and review results using data validation and file compare methodologies.

This suite of documents and technologies is intended for use by individuals that are involved in projects that include the following tasks.

1. Create or Improve the process of "Unit and Regression" testing.
2. Create or Improve the process of "Tracking and Reviewing" the results of a testing cycle using batch job summarization techniques along with data validation and data file compare methodologies.
3. Management of non-relational data structures (i.e. Tradition Sequential Files, VSAM Data Sets, PDS’s, GDG’s and more).
4. Create and document processes for managing Data Structures including record definitions for fixed and variable length files, EBCDIC and ASCII encoding used with US and International Character sets, various numeric formats that are used in COBOL-oriented application and more.
5. Extracting (and possibly reformatting) information from non-relational data structures for use in Relation Data Bases including Access and Excel.
6. Data Management and Application Processing Alternatives that include Redeploying Applications across systems of different architectures and Transferring data between systems.
7. Navigating through the various file format and record content conversions that may be required based on the capabilities, requirements and idiosyncrasies of the current and new system of residence.
8. Build a "File Properties Repository" for non-relational data structure definitions.
9. Automate the process of creating or rebuilding the catalog entries for Micro Focus Enterprise Server.
10. and more…

Many of the test cases use a Windows System with Micro Focus Enterprise Server. However, the concepts and techniques may be ported to a ZOS Mainframe System or a Linux or UNIX System using Micro Focus Enterprise Server.

Note:  At SimoTime the initial testing is done on the following systems.
The unit testing is done on a Windows System with Micro Focus Enterprise Developer configured for an ASCII-encoded environment.
The Regression Testing is done on a Windows System with Micro Focus Enterprise Server configured for an ASCII-encoded environment.

We have made a significant effort to ensure the documents and software technologies are correct and accurate. We reserve the right to make changes without notice at any time. The function delivered in this version is based upon the enhancement requests from a specific group of users. The intent is to provide changes as the need arises and in a timeframe that is dependent upon the availability of resources.

Table of Contents Previous Section Next Section Functional Testing

The objective of functional testing is to obtain the desired business result. A baseline of "expected" results is usually established by executing a job in a controlled environment and manually validating the results. Once a baseline is established then future regression testing can be validated by programmatically comparing the "actual" results with the "expected" results.

Table of Contents Previous Section Next Section Performance Testing

Performance testing is done once the functional testing has been validated. This document will demonstrate and describe how to establish a set of baseline performance metrics by calculating elapsed time for batch jobs from information extracted from the Micro Focus JES output.

Table of Contents Previous Section Next Section Summary

The purpose of this document is to assist as a tutorial for new programmers or as a quick reference for experienced programmers that are interested in redeploying or migrating applications (and associated data) across systems of different architectures. Links to additional documents, programming examples and professional services are provided.

In the world of programming there are many ways to solve a problem. This documentation and software were developed and tested on systems that are configured for a SIMOTIME environment based on the hardware, operating systems, user requirements and security requirements. Therefore, adjustments may be needed to execute the jobs and programs when transferred to a system of a different architecture or configuration.

SIMOTIME Services has experience in moving or sharing data or application processing across a variety of systems. For additional information about SIMOTIME Services or Technologies please contact us using the information in the  Contact or Feedback  section of this document.

Table of Contents Previous Section Next Section Company Overview

SimoTime Technologies was founded in 1987 and is a privately owned company. We specialize in the creation and deployment of business applications using new or existing technologies and services. We have a team of individuals that understand the broad range of technologies being used in today's environments. Our customers include small businesses using Internet technologies to corporations using very large mainframe systems.

Quite often, to reach larger markets or provide a higher level of service to existing customers it requires the newer Internet technologies to work in a complementary manner with existing corporate mainframe systems. We specialize in preparing applications and the associated data that are currently residing on a single platform to be distributed across a variety of platforms.

Preparing the application programs will require the transfer of source members that will be compiled and deployed on the target platform. The data will need to be transferred between the systems and may need to be converted and validated at various stages within the process. SimoTime has the technology, services and experience to assist in the application and data management tasks involved with doing business in a multi-system environment.

Whether you want to use the Internet to expand into new market segments or as a delivery vehicle for existing business functions simply give us a call or check the web site at http://www.simotime.com
